Each morning, when the sun comes up over the mountains, I feel just plain lucky. In a matter of minutes, I will grab my gear, start up the truck and head for the moutains, ocean or vineyards to paint. For me, the most important part of painting is the joy, passion and continual learning, that come from living as an artist. I painted casually until 1998, when I decided to focus seriously on oil painting.
My exhibits and awards have included:
1999 North Light 6th Annual Cover Competition - 2nd place, Beginning Division painting 3 years or less. The jurors of this National Magazine said,

"We were impressed with Gayle's great,
confident brush strokes and bold use of color".

2003 California Art Club - Mountainscapes Show, Pasadena, CA

2003 Oil Painters of America - West / Southwest Regional Exhibition of Traditional oils show, Santa Barbara, CA

2003 San Luis Obispo, CA Botanical Garden Tour-one of five invited artists

2002 San Luis Obispo, CA Juried Plein Air Painting Festival participant with fifty painters from eight states

2001-2003 Continuing Exhibition at the Sea Venture Resort Pismo Beach, CA - Solo Show

2001 Laguna, CA Plein Air Painter's Association (Painter's Membership) two paintings Juried into their Gallery 133 Show

2000 Bolsa Chica, CA Plein Air Arts Festival (Laguna Plein Air Painter's Association) - (painter's membership) - 1st Place

2000 San Luis Obispo, CA Art Center "Brushstrokes 2000" - "Edna Valley Summer Light" awarded 1st Place "Oils" Permanent collection of Blakeslee and Blakeslee

I am happiest when painting directly from nature, particularly in the early morning or late afternoon, when a magical quality affects the color and light. Being a plein air painter brings new opportunities and challenges. I often wish the sun would stay put just a little longer, to get the sparkling lights and lovely shadows on my canvas. There may be sudden winds, dust storms or rain. I may be racing the incoming fog to finish a painting. A sense of humor is an asset when the unexpected happens; such as, the boat I'm painting going out to sea with the owner, being chased by wild horses while driving my truck through a field, or being stung by bees while painting in the vineyards, "every day is a new adventure".

If you see me painting by the roadside near my yellow truck,
"Honk," or stop and say "Hi!".
